AKIM-Jerusalem’s model apartments are designed for youth and young adults with special needs, ages 16-22, who live with their families and are preparing for independent living in the community.
The goal of model apartments is to prepare young people for daily functioning in a range of spheres, including appropriate social behavior, maintaining a household, supermarket shopping, social activities and other aspects of day-to-day life. Once a week, after completing their school day, they come to the apartment, meet their counselor and spend the evening in their apartment.
The next day, they go back to school. At the conclusion of the training period, which lasts for about six months, they make the transition to independent living in the community, with the continuing guidance of AKIM-Jerusalem’s staff.
